Frequently Asked Questions

Call or text to set up a free 30 minute consultation at 917-970-1107.

Zoom and in-person sessions are available.

HOW ARE SESSIONS STRUCTURED?

Sessions last a full hour, usually once a week.

Since my clients receive a full 60 minutes, rather than the usual 50 or even 45 minutes, they are able to go more deeply into each session and gain more insights. Each session becomes more productive, so clients improve faster.

Sessions are conducted either in-person or virtually via Zoom.

WHAT ARE THE SESSION FEES?

Fees are currently $200, payable via Paypal, Venmo, Zelle, or check after each session.

Although there’s no charge for phone calls in between sessions that last under 10 minutes, longer calls will be billed at $1 per minute, payable at the next session.

DO YOU ACCEPT INSURANCE?

I accept certain insurances for individual therapy, though not for couples. Accepted individual therapy insurances include Aetna, Optum, United Health, Oxford and Massachussets BCBS (online only). I don’t accept Anthem BCBS.

If you have a different insurance plan, I’m happy to provide receipts for you to submit to your own insurance for reimbursement for out of network providers. Many plans will reimburse you for some part of the fee for out of network provider claims.

Once your claim is accepted, your insurance will mail you a check for the amount they agree to reimburse or they will apply that amount to your deductible if you haven’t yet met your deductible for the year.

You may also be able to use your Health Savings Account (HSA) or Flexible Spending Account (FSA) to save by paying for therapy with pre-tax dollars. Finally, depending on your financial circumstances, therapy may also be tax-deductible.

ARE SESSIONS CONFIDENTIAL?

Anything you tell me is confidential with the following exceptions:

  • If you are in danger of committing suicide or physical assault
  • If I believe that you are neglecting or abusing a child, or abusing an elderly or a mentally incompetent person
  • If there is a court order to testify

Aside from these exceptions, I don’t disclose that you are a client or anything about you unless you request in writing for me to do so.

HOW DOES THERAPY WORK?

Therapy offers you a safe and supportive environment where you’ll be free to say the things you always wanted to say but were perhaps too afraid to express.

While listening warmly, I’ll work together with you to clarify your needs and goals.

We’ll gain meaningful insights about what’s working and what’s not working in your life and relationships, so that you better understand why you’re experiencing emotional pain and relationship distress.

I’ll then teach you specific tools on how to better handle painful emotions and how to improve your relationships. And I’ll show you how to be consistent in applying these tools even when you’re facing difficult circumstances.

In this way, you’ll learn how to live a happier, more empowered life.

HOW WILL I KNOW IF A THERAPIST IS A GOOD MATCH FOR ME?

With a therapist who is a good match, you’ll feel that the therapist:

  • Understands your concerns and has empathy for how you feel.
  • Supports and cares about you, rather than judges you.
  • Has a sense of hope about how both of you can work together as a team to help you solve your concerns.

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE FOR ME TO SEE PROGRESS?

Progress in therapy takes time, and the time that it takes varies with the severity of one’s difficulties. You should start to feel some emotional relief after a few sessions of therapy.

However, it may take longer to develop effective strategies for changing the unhelpful patterns that resulted in your current emotional pain. With continued sessions, you’ll feel increasing progress in resolving your concerns.

In therapy you’ll learn new, more adaptive strategies for thinking and behaving. However, since these strategies are unfamiliar, it’ll take time to learn how to consistently use these new strategies even in the face of stress.

Thus, continued sessions enable clients to solidify the gains that they make in therapy in a more lasting way.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT WHEN I START THERAPY?

In your first session or two there will be much that your therapist won’t yet know about you, so these sessions will probably be spent more in exploring your concerns rather than in offering you specific strategies for how to resolve them.

But even though you may not leave these early sessions with a specific action plan, you should still sense that your therapist is starting to understand you on an increasingly deeper level.

That feeling of being increasingly understood generally offers a sense of emotional relief and also the beginnings of hope.

These feelings should continue to grow as your therapist understands your concerns well enough so that s/he can offer you more specific strategies that you can use to improve your personal and relationship difficulties.
